Plant-based make-up made from dye plants

Le Rouge Français occupies a unique position in the world of natural make-up. Whilst conventional cosmetics rely almost exclusively on synthetic or mineral pigments, this French brand develops colour cosmetics based on carefully selected dye plants. Thanks to its own patented extraction process, not only the colourants but also the valuable organic properties of these plants are utilised.

The collection is produced in France and is certified organic in accordance with ECOCERT’s COSMOS standard. The formulas are vegan, cruelty-free and contain up to 100 per cent ingredients of natural origin, a large proportion of which are sourced from organic farming.

Most conventional make-up derives its colour from synthetic pigments derived from petroleum or from mineral colourants. Le Rouge Français takes a completely different approach.

Le Rouge Français calls this innovative approach ‘plant-based make-upology’. In this approach, dye plants are not used solely as a natural source of colour, but also for their skincare properties. The result is make-up that combines colour and skincare. The brand uses plant-based pigments sourced from, amongst others:

These plants are selected for both their natural colour intensity and their beneficial properties for the skin.

According to Le Rouge Français, plant-based pigments can create shades that are significantly deeper and more vibrant than traditional alternatives, whilst at the same time contributing to the care and protection of the skin.

A patented extraction process

After several years of research, Le Rouge Français developed its own technology to extract both the natural colourants and the active plant compounds.

As a result, valuable components such as polyphenols, flavonoids, antioxidants and other bioactive substances are retained in the final formula. This means the make-up functions not only as colour cosmetics, but also as a complementary skincare product.

What is plant-based make-upology?

Le Rouge Français refers to this as ‘colour care’.

Plant-based pigments not only provide colour but also deliver natural antioxidants and other skin-supporting substances. Combined with organic butters, waxes and plant-based oils, this creates formulas that help to nourish, moisturise and protect the skin.

Many products contain ingredients that are naturally rich in essential fatty acids, ensuring the make-up remains comfortable to wear and the skin feels less dry throughout the day.

Plant-based oils, butters and waxes

For the base of its formulas, Le Rouge Français selects only ingredients of plant origin, including:

• organic oils
• plant-based butters
• natural waxes

This combination creates a rich, comfortable texture and supports the skin barrier without the use of animal-derived ingredients.

Depending on the formula, Le Rouge Français uses, amongst other things, hemp oil, known for its high content of omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids. This plant-based oil supports the skin barrier and helps to reduce dryness and that tight, pulling sensation.

Hyaluronic acid, probiotics and active skincare

In certain nourishing balms and hybrid make-up products, Le Rouge Français incorporates active ingredients such as bio-fermented hyaluronic acid and probiotics. Hyaluronic acid helps retain moisture in the skin, whilst probiotics contribute to a healthy skin barrier and a balanced skin microbiome.

Conscious Formulas

Le Rouge Français’s formulas are developed based on a clear vision of plant-based make-upology. They are therefore free from petroleum, PFAS and synthetic colourants, and virtually all products are formulated without titanium dioxide. Animal-derived colourants, such as cochineal, are also excluded from the collection.

Instead, Le Rouge Français opts for certified organic ingredients, plant-based pigments derived from dye plants, and nourishing botanical actives that combine colour and skincare.

Certified organic according to COSMOS and ECOCERT

Le Rouge Français products are certified according to the international COSMOS standard and audited by ECOCERT. This certification is among the strictest standards within natural and organic cosmetics.

The entire supply chain is monitored, from ingredient sourcing to packaging, the production process and recyclability. As a result, COSMOS/ECOCERT offers far greater assurance than general marketing claims such as ‘green’, ‘clean’ or ‘natural’.

Vegan and cruelty-free

All Le Rouge Français products are vegan and certified by PETA.

• alternatives are sought for traditional ingredients such as beeswax or animal-derived colourants

Examples of this include rice wax as an alternative to beeswax and innovative plant-based materials as substitutes for animal-derived raw materials.

100% recyclable packaging

All packaging components are designed to be fully recyclable.

Where possible, the brand opts for:

Organically sourced packaging materials

FSC-certified paper and wood

The cardboard packaging and make-up pencils are produced from fibres sourced from responsibly managed forests. This helps to preserve biodiversity and supports sustainable forest management.

Responsible sourcing of mica

Mica provides shine and light reflection in cosmetics, but its extraction is regularly the subject of debate worldwide.

Le Rouge Français is a member of the Responsible Minerals Initiative (RMI), an international partnership that oversees responsible sourcing in accordance with environmental and social criteria, under the guidance of the OECD.
