At GreenBeautyShop, a good, healthy natural shampoo is made from pure, nourishing ingredients that support the hair and scalp without unnecessarily straining them. Ingredients such as silicones, harsh degreasing sulphates (such as SLS and SLES), mineral oils, microplastics, synthetic fragrances and other undesirable substances that are often found in conventional shampoos – and even in those marketed as ‘natural’ – do not, in our opinion, belong in a healthy natural hair care routine.
Hair and scalp come into contact with shampoo almost every day. The formulation therefore influences how the hair feels, how the scalp reacts and how healthy, supple and strong the hair looks.
For us, a healthy natural shampoo is one that gently cleanses the hair and scalp without disrupting the natural balance. The hair feels clean, fresh and well-cared-for without drying out, causing irritation or leaving a sealing, artificial film.
That is why we consciously choose natural and certified organic shampoos with mild cleansers and nourishing ingredients such as plant-based oils, herbs and extracts, which help to care for, strengthen and keep the hair and scalp in balance.
Which ingredients would you prefer to avoid in shampoo?
Many conventional shampoos, and even those marketed as ‘natural’, often contain undesirable ingredients that, in our opinion, do not belong in a healthy, natural hair care routine, especially with frequent use on the hair and scalp.
These include sulphates (such as SLS and SLES), silicones, mineral oils, microplastics, PEGs, synthetic fragrances and colourants, parabens and other preservatives, and certain forms of alcohol.
Below, we explain the most common undesirable ingredients in more detail. These can be harsh or even harmful to the hair, the scalp and/or the environment.
Sulphates (such as SLS and SLES)
Are used for their cleansing and foaming properties, but can severely strip the hair and scalp of natural oils, which can lead to dryness, hair breakage and scalp irritation.
Silicones
Are used to make the hair feel smooth and shiny, but form a film around the hair that can weigh it down and limit the absorption of nourishing ingredients.
Mineral oils
Can form a sealing layer around the hair and scalp and do not actively contribute to hair care.
Microplastics
Synthetic particles that provide texture and structure, but we avoid these due to their harmful impact on the environment and skin.
PEGs (emulsifiers)
Are used to blend ingredients and improve texture. We avoid PEGs due to their synthetic origin, as they can make the scalp more permeable to other substances, and because of potential residual traces of ethylene oxide and 1,4-dioxane from the manufacturing process.
Synthetic fragrances and colourants
Are added for scent and appearance, but can cause irritation or reactions on a sensitive scalp and do not contribute to the product’s effectiveness.
Parabens and other preservatives
Are used to extend the shelf life of products, but can be irritating to a sensitive scalp.
Alcohol (such as alcohol denat.)
Can make products light and quick-drying, but may dry out the hair and scalp with frequent use.
