What is a natural sponge?

A natural sponge is a simple form of life that occurs on the bottom of all oceans. In the sea, the sponge acts as a filter. It pumps water through itself, which is how a sponge obtains nutrition (such as plankton). There are more than 7,500 different species of sponge, only 6 of which are suitable for sale. Some grow to more than 3 metres in height! Depending on the temperature, depth and current, a sponge needs between six months and five years to grow.

Why is a natural sponge better?

Natural sponges are wonderfully soft on your skin, can absorb a lot of water and easily release that water again (by squeezing them). The fibres of a sponge are very similar to silk, and sponges have been used by people for washing themselves for centuries. A synthetic sponge has closed air bubbles, while a natural sponge has channels that all have an outlet, allowing dirt to be easily removed. A natural sponge is therefore particularly hygienic!

NB: a natural sponge should not come into contact with boiling water. If it is necessary to wash the sponge, this can be done in the washing machine (in a laundry bag) on the wool programme.
