The natural sponges of Natural Intimacy are harvested with the utmost respect for nature and the environment. Sponges grow back when pruned, and are therefore a 'renewable product'.
Responsible pruning extends the life of a natural sponge.
Unpruned sponges did not survive more than 10 years, but if trained divers expertly prune the sponge so that the roots remain undamaged, the sponge can renew itself and lives longer!
A natural sponge resembles a plant but is in fact a simple, very primitive, multicellular animal species; hence the nickname sponge. Sponges live in seas and oceans, but there are also freshwater sponges. They fix themselves on the sea bottom and catch their food by filtering water through the natural flow of the sea through their thousands of small pores. Sponges have no organs, muscles or nerves: like a plant, they cannot think or feel pain.
The sea sponge was used long ago for cleaning, bathing, applying oil to the skin and as a menstrual tampon.
When wet, natural sponges silk becomes soft, and pores are clearly visible. When they dry, they become hard and durable. Natural sponges can be used intensively for months.
